About the Bluefins

We are a dive club mainly focussed on freedive spearfishing. The club is based in Auckland, New Zealand, where it has been operating since the early 1970's. Club members are mainly interested in recreational and competitive spearfishing, but we also regularly take other seafood whilst freediving, such as crayfish, scallops, and mussels. Some members are interested in underwater photography and this has been an added point of interest at club meetings.

NZ Spearfishing Competitions focus on a restricted fish list of up to 12 species, which are largely pelagic, except for a couple of prolific and good eating reef fish to provide a challenge to the beginner divers. We advocate selective fishing, concentrating on pelagic and commercial species, and have self-imposed limits regarding the number of fish weighed in per day.

Our annual club points trophy is awarded for the best years' catch, judged by the size of fish weighed in and the species of those fish, up to a limited number for each species. There are also trophies for the largest Snapper, Kingfish, John Dory, and Trevally.

Monthly club meetings provide the chance to share your dives with others, see and hear stories from more experienced divers, enjoy guest speakers, organise club dive trips, and meet dive partners.

Meetings start at 7 pm and are to be held at club members' houses.

Club newsletters are issued once a month, and can be downloaded for free from the menu bar to the left.

Club dive trips are scheduled for the first weekend after each meeting (weather permitting). They are a chance for new members to experience some of the best diving and gain valuable experience around the more experienced club members.

So, come along and learn about the sport, see the gear, meet the people doing it, and come with us on some mind blowing dive trips. The Bluefins is the best venue for you to learn more about the sport of spearfishing from experienced divers. Our aim is to get YOU out there doing it and helping YOU get more enjoyment out of the underwater world.
